Mmm, my co-worker and I were discussing this feud at work the other day, so I've had it on my mind. And that means...Hip Hop Story time!

After the Jerry Teller management fiasco that broke up N.W.A., there was plenty of bad blood between Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E. It was mostly just potshots here and there against one another in interviews, but it cumulated in the form of a diss song from each of them.

The first of those songs was released by Dr. Dre in 1992, on his classic album, The Chronic. Fuck wit Dre Day was a diss song directed at 3 different rappers (Eazy-E, Tim Dog, and Luke Campbell), but with Eazy first and foremost among them. Most of it was just general insults against Eazy, rather than anything specific like Eazy would do in his response rap, but in particular Dre mocked him over his short stature, perceived inability to fight, and the money issues that helped break up N.W.A. One of the biggest draws of the song were the verses by Snoop Doggy Dogg, back when he was just getting started in the game (This was almost a year before his debut album, Doggystyle, was even released).

In 1993, Eazy-E struck back with Real Muthaphuckkin G's, on his EP, It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa. In it, he was far more descriptive in his insults toward Dre, and Snoop. He mentions the contract Dre had signed that entitles Ruthless Records to a percentage of the sales from any album he released. So even diss records aimed at Eazy were still earning him a paycheck.

Eazy-E, Dresta, and B.G. Knocc Out call Dre a "studio gangsta", referencing the fact that he doesn't have any real street cred, even though he acts tough and talks about how much of a real G he is. They make similar claims about Snoop, but in his case, it was just insults rather than anything with factual basis (Snoop was actually a Crip back in the day).

Throughout the song, Eazy makes mention to several things that would embarrass Dr. Dre. He:

Brings up the time Dre beat the shit out of a woman (Dee Barnes) back in the day, and how doing so doesn't make him any tougher;

Made reference to Suge Knight's infamous abuse of his staff at Death Row Records, when that information was no more than rumors;

Makes mention of how quickly he switched to singing the praises of weed, when back in the day he hated the stuff, believing that it gave people brain damage;

And in the music video, we're treated to several shots of Dr. Dre wearing a sequined outfit and lipstick, from back when he was a part of the World Class Wreckin' Cru, which really shot down any claims he had of being "hard".

They're both great songs, and I like both artists, but I think Eazy roasted Dre alive on Real Muthaphuckkin G's. While Dre could only make fun of Eazy on his song, he got some serious burns when Eazy returned fire.

I think my favorite part from both songs is Dresta's verses.

And your set don't accept ya',

Scared to kick it with your homies 'cause you know they don't respect ya'.

I never even needed to see the video to be confused by the songs. I always enjoyed listening to their albums at work though.

It's cool that you were able to listen to Mr. Bungle at work. But I hear ya' there. The only song I can think of that's not confusing is The Girls of Porn. Since it's about exactly what it sounds like it's about. Also, you posted while I was typing this, so no problem!

That was...Interesting. MrWeebl, huh?

I've never been a big fan of these guys, but the music video for this still makes me smile to this day.

I have a soft spot for Fall Out Boy. They have a lot of pretty clever lines, and I kinda love their vidyas. Never went out of my way to listen to them though.

Been listening to Paul Simon since the SNL anniversary show. <3
