Job System
In Ragnarok Online, the skills and improvements to stats that a character receives are defined by their Job. Being promoted to a new Job is considered a milestone achievement and something to be celebrated as your character advances down the skill lines available to them and becomes more proficient in combat. Characters start out as Novices, where they learn the basics of the game and work to figure out what kind of Jobs they are interested in pursuing. Once they reach Job Level 10, characters have a variety of First Jobs available to them. After choosing a First Job and reaching Job Level 40 as that First Job (or higher, for more skill points), they can be promoted to a Second Job. Once a character has reached Base Level 99 and Job Level 50 as a Second Job, they have a few options available to them.
The first option is to Transcend. This means that the character has proven themselves to be valiant heroes and have met with the Valkyrie. They are then reborn in Midgard where they must restart their journeys as Novices. The reward for this is a more powerful, transcendent character. They gain bonus stat points upon rebirth as well as an additional 25% Max HP and Max SP. They also receive a different color palette for their Job sprites. Once the character has reached Base Level 99 and Job Level 50-70 (70 recommended) as a Second Job again, they are then promoted to their Third Job. In addition, being reborn gives characters the opportunity to allocate stat and skill points differently; starting out as a High Novice gives the character a "blank slate" for stats and skills.
Characters can skip over this process and go straight to Third Job. From a game mechanics perspective, this is a sub-optimal choice; players lose out on the variety of benefits given to them by transcending. It is always recommended to transcend.
The Transcendent process is not an option for any characters that are adopted.
An example of the leveling and Job changing process would look something like this:
- Start off as a Novice
- Reach Job Level 10
- Choose a First Job (Swordsman)
- Reach Job Level 40-50
- Choose a Second Job (Knight)
- Reach Base Level 99
- Rebirth (transcend)
- Restart as a Base Level 1 and Job Level 1 High Novice (all stats and skills are reset)
- Reach Job Level 10
- Job change to the same First Job (High Swordsman)
- Reach Job Level 40-50 (50 always recommended)
- Job change to the same Transcendent Job (Lord Knight)
- Reach Base Level 99 andJob Level 50-70 (70 always recommended)
- Job change to the Third Job (Rune Knight)
- The character may now level up to Base Level 175 and Job Level 60
